“50 to 500-year-old oak trees are burning in front of our eyes at a forest in Zagros mountains. Three locals are doing their best so they could maybe put out the fire. They are alone and exhausted,” writes Tehran-based photographer Ahmad Halabisaz. He traveled to the Khaeez forest in southwestern Kohgiluyeh Boyer-Ahmad Province to photograph wildfires that raged across five provinces. Recent wildfires caused substantial damage to the Zagros forests and their natural inhabitants. This came as the Iranian public leveled harsh criticism against the government for its incompetence. “There are constant calls from the governor’s office with promises of help and water that are never sent. I am standing there shocked, not knowing whether I should take photos or save the trees,” Halabisaz says. “These forests trust the local people quelling the flames with their empty hands.”
«درخت‌های زیبای بلوط ۵۰ تا ۵۰۰ ساله جلوی چشم‌هایمان یکی یکی می سوختند. سه نفر از مردم محلی با دستهای خالی همه کار می‌کردند تا شاید آتش را خاموش کنند. تنها بودند و دیگر جانی برایشان نمانده بود.» این را احمد حلبی‌ساز، عکاس ساکن تهران، میگوید. او به جنگل خاییز در استان کهگیلویه و بویراحمد سفر کرد تا از آتشی عکاسی کند که جنگلهای پنج استان را درگیر خود کرد. آتش‌سوزی اخیر صدمه‌ی قابل توجهی به زیست‌بوم جنگلهای زاگرس و ساکنین آن زد. این در حالیست که تیر شدیدترین انتقادها به سمت دولت برای بی‌کفایتیش نشانه رفت. حلبی‌ساز میگوید: «فرماندار هر پنج دقیقه زنگ میزد و دستور میداد که چکار کنند. مردم اما خودشان بهتر میدانستند چکار باید کرد. وعده‌ی ارسال آب و کمک میداد اما خبری از چیزی نبود. مات و مبهوت بودم که عکاسی کنم یا درختها را نجات بدهم.» او میگوید: «زاگرس زیبای زخمی نیازی به آنها نداشت. دلش به داشتن مردمی ساده با دستهایی خالی خوش بود.»
